Hasta hace unos años había pocas cosas tan placenteras como comprarse un disco y sentarse durante horas a ver con todo cuidado los detalles de la carátula. Esa deliciosa experiencia que disfrutamos los que tuvimos la suerte de comprar los discos grandes de acetato (los que se ponían a 33 ½ revoluciones por minuto) no la gozan hoy los que nacieron en la era del disco compacto. Lo que era un formato grande en el que se explayaban los colores, los dibujos, las fotografías y los juegos tipográficos se transformó en un exiguo «librito» en el que cuesta ver los detalles. Pocas cosas hay tan tristes como comparar una copia de pasta y otra en CD del mismo disco. Toda lo que era sugerencia y estímulo visual en una se transformó en miniatura en la otra. Menos mal que al menos en lo que al sonido se refiere, el CD nos trajo una mejora y la promesa de no rayarse tan fácilmente como sus negros y frágiles antecesores.
Del disco de 33 RPM al disco compacto hubo un cambio que hizo que nuestra sensibilidad se resquebrajara. Antes, comprar una grabación en una tienda llena de afiches y de música a todo volumen era una experiencia en la que se mezclaban la promesa de adquirir el mejor disco de tal o cual banda con el arte que entraba por tus ojos cuando veías aquellas portadas fascinantes y seductoras que te hipnotizaban. Hoy en día, la experiencia sigue siendo más o menos la misma, aunque atenuada. El tamaño del CD no produce esas ansias de llegar a casa, de poner el disco, de sentarse a oír qué grabaron nuestros artistas favoritos mientras leemos las liner notes o nos solazamos con las letras de las canciones. Tampoco produce el efecto mesmerizador que genera la gráfica, ése que hacía estragos en los adolescentes de mi época y que nos ponía a copiar como locos los dibujos que hizo Derek Riggs para las portadas de los discos de Iron Maiden.
De alguna manera extraña y difícil de precisar, la comunión entre música e imágenes que se da en la portada de un disco, crea en los seres humanos un estándar, una especie de canon bajo el que se forjan la sensibilidad, el carácter y todo aquello que se transforma en una actitud ante la vida. Si para algo sirve el arte, es para eso: para moldearnos, y, es curioso, pero mucha gente que conozco afirma que su primer contacto con una experiencia artística total (de ésas que te marcan) se remonta a la época en que compraba discos y disfrutaba a plenitud del lenguaje visual que desplegaba cada portada porque, aunque Uds. no lo crean, el trozo de papel impreso en que vienen los discos define tendencias que influyen en el mundo de la moda, del arte, del diseño, de la música y de toda la sociedad.
Por eso, entre muchas razones, resulta alarmante la rapidez con que se ha esparcido lo que hoy llamamos piratería. Cada calle, cada esquina, cada rincón de nuestras ciudades, es perfecta para el buhonero que vende copias ilegales de todo aquello que se puede reproducir digitalmente. Más allá de las implicaciones legales y económicas de este fenómeno, hay una batalla sorda que se libra en el terreno de la sensibilidad personal, y que se pierde en la medida en que al consumidor que compra un «quemadito» le importa un rábano que la calidad de la grabación sea mediocre, que su carátula venga mal impresa, que el disco no traiga las letras de las canciones ni las fotografías ni las ilustraciones de la contraportada o del interior. A alguien así tampoco le interesará tener una vida buena y confortable en una casa, en una ciudad y en un país donde las cosas estén en su puesto, sean bonitas y amables.
El disco era (y es) cultura, pero nadie se daba (ni se da) cuenta. A ver si nos vamos entendiendo.

Los fantasmas no son las entidades extrañas y vaporosas que nos han mostrado la tradición. Como ha dicho más de una vez nuestro querido Enrique Enriquez, los fantasmas son los recuerdos de todos aquéllos que hemos conocido y que, de pronto, ante un estímulo cualquiera, se nos aparecen en nuestra memoria sin pedir permiso y nos hacen reír o llorar con su hueca presencia. Un objeto, una fragancia, una sombra, un crujido puede convertirse en la llave que le abra el candado al lugar de nuestra imaginación donde flotan las memorias de la gente que quisimos o que odiamos, de los lugares donde fuimos felices o desdichados, de los artefactos que nos convirtieron en lo que somos hoy.
A veces los espectros salen a la luz por una combinación azarosa de circunstancias o por la aparición violenta de un hecho que remueve nuestro grueso pasado y deja salir aquello que parecía desaparecido para siempre. Así hay quien se come un bizcocho para estimular el recuerdo feliz de las tardes de su infancia o quien se asusta porque el chillido de un pájaro le trae la imagen de su hermano muerto hace años.
De todos los estímulos posibles hay uno que en su amabilidad resulta demoledor: la música. Basta y sobra que pongas un disco para que miles de ectoplasmas te rodeen, y lo más curioso es que muchos de esos fantasmas ni siquiera son tuyos porque la música es el hogar de todos los espectros, la sustancia donde flotan los recuerdos de toda la humanidad.
Cada quien, en cada audición, adquiere los espectros que trae consigo la música y, a la vez (y sin darse cuenta), deja en ella esas experiencias que más tarde se transformarán en eso que hemos convenido en llamar fantasmas. Por eso cuando pones un cuarteto de Schubert, un descalabro de Jimi Hendrix o un coro de Oscar D’León, tu vida se carga con los monstruos que cada una de estas piezas trae consigo.

El año pasado decidí volver a mis discos viejos, a esas canciones de los grupos de antes que oí miles de veces. En varias oportunidades la experiencia no resultó como esperaba. Un buen número de las canciones que oía y oía en mi adolescencia y que me hicieron pasar ratos maravillosos, resultaron ser piezas mediocres que no resistieron la prueba del tiempo ni el más mínimo control de calidad. Con los años, uno se vuelve más exigente y maniático con sus gustos.
Más tarde comencé a usar el Lime Wire para bajar canciones y así continuar con mi experimento. La idea era afinar el oído y llevar a cabo el ejercicio masoquista de derrumbar el arrobo que me llevó a creer en mi temprana juventud que aquellas piezas musicales eran dignas de elogio. Así continúe oyendo música hasta que un día produje una suerte de veredicto: con sus altas y sus bajas (bien altas y bien bajas en algunos casos), superbandas como Cream, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Metallica y The Who eran y son dignas de permanecer en mi panteón personal. Pero de todos ellos, el único que me hizo sentir orgulloso de haber oído sus composiciones cuando apenas tenía catorce o quince años de edad, fue Rush.
Reescuchar una y otra vez los discos de ese trío canadiense representó un viaje no sólo al pasado, sino a una complejidad que trasciende las épocas que al menos a este servidor le ha tocado vivir. Aún no entiendo cómo un carajito como yo se compró y escuchó A farewell to kings, 2112 o Hemispheres. Debe ser que algo extraño se removió en mi vida cuando oí el solo de batería que hace Neil Peart en medio de la versión de YYZ que está en Exit...Stage left o la versión de La villa strangiato que está en el mismo disco, y que me enseñó algo misterioso y desconocido que hoy asocio con la búsqueda de la perfección.
Oír Tom Sawyer, Red barchetta o The trees es entender que los elementos que conforman las canciones de Rush están engranados a la perfección, que existe un lazo muy estrecho entre las letras que hablan de literatura, de mitología y de ciencia ficción con el uso de los teclados, con los golpes a la batería, con los cambios de ritmo que le imprime el bajo a cada pieza, con la fuerza de los acordes de la guitarra y la extensión de muchas de las composiciones de esta banda
Ver en DVD el concierto que Rush grabara en Río de Janeiro, oír Vapor trails y relacionarlo con Fly by night, entender que Roll the bones es un disco proverbial porque es, a la vez, duro y melancólico, suponen la confirmación una y otra vez de que ese grupo era de verdad, de que su música sonaba cabilla hace veintitantos años y que sigue sonando así en el presente porque sus creadores (Neil Peart, Alex Lifeson y Geddy Lee) no se andaban ni se andan con güevonadas.
Cada vez que pongo Rush a todo volumen, el cuarto (o el carro) se me llena de fantasmas y de una elefantiásica satisfacción.

Después de hacer este experimento sentimental y de obtener algunos resultados (vi a Ronnie James Dio en la Concha Acústica de Bello Monte el 21 de julio de 2006, gracias a Dios), quedé con una extraña desazón que me hizo sentir viejo. Muy pronto me puse orejas a las obras y le apliqué a las bandas de mi presente el mismo examen que le dediqué a las bandas de mi pasado. Permítanme decirles que el resultado fue desconcertante por la enorme cantidad de basura que apareció y por la montaña de bandas mediocres que suenan en las radios y se encuentran de a miles en Lime Wire.
Para no hacer un recuento del fastidio ni para expresar mi incomodidad hacia grupos como Franz Ferdinand, Oasis, Nirvana, Slipknot ni Limp Bizkit, voy a hablar de las dos bandas que lograron desmentir un pensamiento que me cruzó por la mente mientras realizaba este experimento y que me hizo sentir viejo a mi pesar. El pensamiento era el célebre, manido y jorgemanriquiano «ya no se hace música tan buena como la de antes». Las dos bandas que se mantuvieron incólumes ante los avatares de mi examen fueron Morphine, ya desaparecida tras la muerte de su cantante y bajista Mark Sandman, por lo cual ya podría pasar a formar parte de las bandas «de antes», y Wolfmother, un trío australiano que suena cabilla y que encuentra la inspiración para sus quehaceres musicales (¡oh casualidad!) en Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix, Cream y todos los grandes del pasado.
La existencia de una banda como Wolfmother sembró tranquilidad en mi espíritu más ocioso que inquieto. A pesar de que la música popular contemporánea se ha perdido en el mercadeo y en la obligación de hacer piezas cortas para que los subnormales que oyen radio no pulsen el botón de su aparato y cambien de emisora, los caballeros que conforman Wolfmother ha sabido producir canciones duras y solventes que se cuelan muy bien en el mainstream y en los que sentimos nostalgia por los duros de antes.

El ACDC de Back in black no volverá, pero cada vez que pongo ese disco pienso en aquellos días cuando mi hermano y yo lo oíamos a todo volumen para tormento de nuestros padres. Ese pensamiento es el fantasma que esa grabación devela para mí y yo no puedo hacer otra cosa que darle la bienvenida cada vez que aparece.
No hacerlo sería una deslealtad y una tremenda idiotez.

a veces cuando leo tu blog pienso que te deberías llamar Arrecheto, siempre terminas como regañón, pero no importa, en este caso tienes razón.
Lo de la izquierda no lo he leído, lei lo publicado y allí también coincido contigo. Nada como echarse en un cojín (te llevo unos muchos años) con la carátula de la última adquisición y mirarla por horas, mientras estrenabas el vinilo, para luego leer todo desde el copyright hasta el más mínimo de los créditos. Y después volverlo a poner para cantar las letras.
Yo era de las que tenía las paredes decoradas con los discos....qué tiempos aquellos, cuando el futuro estaba vacío pero era inmenso, como dijo una poeta.
Ahora entre lo compacto de los discos y de mis ojos, me pierdo lo mejor.

Uno de mis mejores recuerdos era el olor que salía de estas portadas al abrirlas por primera vez, después de frotar con fuerza el filo del lp contra la pierna del blue jean para romper el plástico (vaya técnica maestra, ya sepultada por el mp3...) ¡Larga vida a Roger Dean y sus portadas para Yes, y también larga vida al pana que hacía las portadas para los discos de la Sonora Ponceña en los 70's!

una de las principales consecuencias de habitar en un país desinformado, eterno adolescente, donde no llegaban revistas, ni se leían reseñas, ni había muchos investigadores ni críticos recomendando novedades discográficas, es que llegabas a hacer descubrimientos magníficos sólamente por la portada de un disco. Yo llegué por accidente, porque me gustó la carátula del LP tan parecida a un cómic de ciencia ficción, a uno de los discos que más me marcó la temprana adolescencia: Grace Under Pressure, de unos canadienses (allí) que se llamaban Rush.
las portadas de los discos tuvieron para nuestra generación la misma importancia que para nuestros padres tuvo la penicilina. de cierta manera, nos curó la imaginación de espantos y nos hizo más ágiles para pensar -dibujar, superar, hacer potable- el tiempo pasado o el porvenir. no sé si alguien dijo -o a lo mejor estoy alucinando otra vez- que "sólo se supera la muerte con un poco de muerte propia", a lo mejor sea por eso, que el sentimiento que nos produjo el tránsito del formato carátula al CD, sea tan cercano al luto. ya para irme: en estos días revisaba la carátula de Jazz de Queen - y la cosa era como un platillo bien hecho: tan bueno por dentro como por fuera- de un golpe entendí por qué uno todavía en estos días aciagos puede elegir entre exilarse o guapear...y de calle gana guapear. guapear -a lo beau geste- desde la idea más personal que se tenga de la belleza. guapear contra lo feo y lo malo -eso, "lo feo y lo malo", hoy tan tenebrosamente claro frente a nuestras vidas. Roberto, por encimita te digo que tienes razón con eso del disco.. pero creo la pitratería es un proceso natural de democratización de la musica...que llevará a las personas a escojer sólo lo que les gusta, desmantelará las grandes compañias como las conocemos hoy día y al final por internet bajaremos lo que qieramos nostros, y no tendremos que comprar un disco de 12 canciones malas para tener una buena...
